Thermal Energy Infrastructure as Electric Capacity
New York's Climate Law says that in 30 years the vast majority of NYS’s buildings will need to convert to electrically driven space heating and hot water. Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are known for their ultra-high efficiencies for heating and cooling, and unparalleled environmental benefits. GSHPs also rank near the top of a variety of important metrics important to electric utilities, such as peak shaving, grid utilization, distributed energy resource (DER), energy intensity and carbon emission avoidance. There’s emphasis on the development of electric battery storage solutions to address a number of these metrics. We need to begin to appreciate that a closed-loop geothermal borehole is perhaps the strongest DER candidate, bringing 75% of its energy from a renewable resource, requiring practically no maintenance and having a useful life beyond 100 years.

2024 GeoStar Top Job Presentations
The objective of the GEOSTAR Top Job Competition is to highlight and recognize the incredible talent, creativity and imagination that geothermal system designers and installers are bringing to the market. Additionally, these excellent case studies communicate to those outside the industry the variety of ways that geothermal heat pump technology can be applied. This year’s award winners have met the challenge!
Master of Ceremonies:
- Joanne Coons / NY-GEO Member
Award Awardees:
- RESIDENTIAL: Matt Dennis / Halco Energy
- COMMERCIAL: Tony Amis / Endurant Energy
- DRILLING: Johnny Fry / Celsius Energy and Eric Bosworth / Eversource Energy

Energy Master Plans - Central to Regional Building Electrification
An energy master plan is a tool that can help with the long-range planning of energy projects, which could be done for a single large building, a campus, a community, a country, or region of the world. Establishing a baseline condition and long-range goals/targets are common elements of these important documents. Our panel will talk about their approach, experience and results of energy master plans their firms have engaged at various scales. Spoiler Alert: Ground source heat pumps just might figure in prominently!
Moderator:
- Derek Dwyer / Enertech Global

Department of Energy: Pumped Up about Geothermal Heat Pumps
The Department of Energy's (DOE) Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) aims to increase all geothermal energy deployment through research, development, and demonstration of innovative technologies that enhance exploration and production. Within the GTO, Geothermal Heat Pumps (GHP)as characterized as a low temperature resource, and is seen as a very important technology as the country moves towards broad building electrification. This presentation will give a high-level overview of the major activities impacting GHP technology development and market development. Attendees will hear about the recently released 1) Geothermal Heat Pump Impacts Report highlighting the significant value of GHPs as a cost reduction and decarbonization technology, 3) the upcoming Liftoff study showing pathways to broader adoption of GHPs 3) the DOE's funding multiple projects across the country, 4) supporting heat pump manufacturing, 5) review of federal GHP tax incentives, 6) creating educational resources and sharing the news about how the many benefits of GHPs!
