Building Energy Modeling: The Foundation of a GHX Design
When designing large commercial and networked GSHP systems the energy modeling of the building(s) is key to the design of a closed loop ground source heat pump system. This session will outline the key differences in the types of modeling to size equipment and what’s needed to design a geothermal ground heat exchangers – which operates more like a thermal battery.

IGSHPA Commercial Designer Certification - Under Construction!
IGSHPA is pleased to provide attendees of this presentation with an update on the development of the first of many new training and certification programs planned for roll-out in 2025. The new Commercial Designer Course will be a combination of web-based and instructor-led training modules. It will be taught from the soon-to-be revised ANSI/CSA/IGSHPA C448 Standard for the Design and installation of ground source heat pump systems for commercial and residential buildings and the industry’s best practices. The presentation will include examples of the web-based training screens being developed for the first modules under construction. This standardized application, training, testing, and certification program is managed by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group) which is recognized globally as a Standards Development Organization (SDO).

Specs That Make Sense
The design specifications and drawings for a GSHP project outline the bidding contractors scope of work. Since GSHP projects have historically been a small percentage of HVAC work scopes, these specifications often times leave something to be desired. This program will outline the elements of a good set of written specifications and details for drawings to provide the information contractor need to be successful and installations that are consistent with industry standards.

Geothermal Feasibility: Approaches & Tools
Requests for GSHP feasibility studies at the outset of a building electrification project or new construction are increasingly common. That's due in large part to recent passage of climate legislation and incentive programs on the state and federal level. This program will point out some tools and approaches that architects and engineers can use to compare the installation and operating costs of a GSHP system, versus conventional HVAC and ASHP systems.

Finishing Strong - GSHP System Commissioning & Operator Training
The project is not complete unit there's been proper commissioning of the internal and external system components and corresponding operator training. Unfortunately, this is not the norm for many GSHP systems - especially ensuring that the operations people for the building are familiar with how it works and how to keep it operating to the level of the intended design. This program will provide practical elements of a full system commissioning and the key elements of operator training to keep the system running as good as new for decades into the future.
