Preview of C448 Binational Standard - Updated & Expanded

Last updated in 2017, the ANSI/CSA/IGSHPA C448 Design and Installation and Standard for Ground Source Heat Pumps has been undergoing an overhaul to both update and expand the sections.  Nearing the end of a long process the next release is set for later in 2024.  Existing sections will be updated and new sections, like Thermal Energy Networks, Wastewater Energy Transfer and Energy Piles will be added.  The presenters are leaders in the process and will bring us a preview of what's to be released in the next few months.

Geothermal for High Rise Buildings: Design Considerations

There was a time when GSHPs were thought to be inappropriate for tall buildings above a certain number of stories.  There are some practical considerations for hydronic distribution in tall buildings that certainly apply, but ways to incorporate GSHPs into every taller buildings is being demonstrated regularly.  The presenter will talk about the design considerations when incorporating GSHPs into taller buildings by providing the methodology and showing examples in the built environment.

Leak Detection and EH&S Considerations for Energy Transfer Fluids

Energy transfer fluids have been referred to has the circulatory system of a GSHP system.  Now that we are seeing the rise of Thermal Energy Networks, energy transfer fluids will be circulating through the infrastructure of city streets and connected buildings.  The water-based fluids require planning and testing when being charged into a system, then monitored and adjusted during the life a of system.

Results from Zero Place, a GSHP Multifamily, Mixed-Use Building

Zero Place is an ultra-low energy load, carbon neutral, fossil-fuel free, multifamily, mixed use building that serves as a model for low-impact, new residential and commercial developments in cold-climate regions. The design team identified three priorities to ensure the project’s high efficiency: (1) optimize the energy efficiency of the thermal envelope, (2) select maximum efficiency mechanical systems, and (3) ensure the selected solar photovoltaic (PV) system has the capacity to meet the building’s entire energy load. A critical aspect of Zero Place’s success was having an integrated design team that collectively understood high performance as essential to the project.  This presentation will show the third party monitoring data that confirms broad application of this approach is just what the doctor ordered to meet NYS's climate and energy goals.
