Peak Demand Comparison of ASHP, CCHP and GSHP

With the renewed interest in decarbonization and ultimately the replacement of gas appliances with heat pumps, the utility industry is once again very interested in peak demand.  Most of the current emphasis is on cooling peak demand since currently the vast majority of electric utilities are all summer peaking, however it is estimated that some northern utilities will revert to winter peaking within 2-3 years, with others to follow.  Decarbonization and winter peaking utilities will put the spotlight on sizing HP’s for heating and the choice for auxiliary supplemental heat source.  This presentation will discuss sizing issues and peak demand comparison of ASHP, CCHP and GSHP’s.

Driving Down GSHP Grid Impacts at the Building Level

The ground source heat pump industry prides itself on having low electric grid impacts, relative to other building electrification technologies.  But this is only achieved through careful design choices in a number of key areas.  This session will talk about 1) ground loop circulator selection & operation, 2) the pros and cons of auxiliary and backup electric heat, 3) monitored geothermal heat pump data showing good and bad peak grid impacts, and 4) will discuss the use of “smart panels” to limit the demand peaks and prevent service upgrades.

GSHPs and the Electric Grid

This program aims to bring together some of the best minds when it comes to understanding the benefits of GSHP to the future of the Electric Grid.   Compelling sets of facts and projections that lead to an inescapable conclusion - GSHPs need to be a central part of building electrification to avoid extensive electric system upgrades.  Taking a step further, what the monetizable benefit of these installations of permanent, renewable thermal infrastructure.  Lastly there will be a call to action setting a direction to be plugged into advocacy agendas to move policy and regulation in the right direction.  Let’s bring about the changes needed to encourage sustainable investments in the installation of GSHPs.

(Grid) Interactive Heat Pumps

For years we have heard about the “smart grid” when a signal from your utility will influence or control your electrical appliances.  While this is certainly not pervasive, there are a number of ways heat pumps can be responsive to the electric grid pricing, while also lowering demand.  In this program we will hear about some examples of the connected heat pump, some readily available and others requiring significant shifts in the way we regulate and access energy.
