GEOTHERMAL HEAT EXCHANGER – 2025

Room M1

Room Proctor: Aeowyn Kendall / Aztech Geothermal, LLC

Update on NYS Geothermal Drilling Regulations

NY-GEO with other industry and environmental stakeholder groups were able to get new legislation passed which eliminated sections of the regulations for drilling geothermal boreholes deeper than 500 feet.  As you might imagine, regulations are complicated. Simply eliminating aspects of the law that regulated boreholes beyond 500 feet now requires a new set of regulations with the goal of preventing negative environmental impacts and promote worker safety while making permitting deeper geothermal boreholes less burdensome than in the past. NY-GEO is working with the DEC to help create new regulations.  This session is a window into an ongoing, and very important process.

Geothermal Borefield Quality Assurance

There’s a lot riding on the integrity of a large geothermal borefield.  Let’s face it, once it’s all grouted and backfilled – maybe even under a building’s foundation (!) , it’s non-trivial to fix.  This session will share ideas about how to get it right the first time!  You’ll hear from folks who have literally been in the trenches sharing perspectives on quality assurance. You’ll also hear about IGSHPA’s Certified Geothermal Inspector (CGI) training which outlines a comprehensive approach to borefield quality assurance.

Waste Heat Recovery & Thermal Storage for Buildings & Networks

This session will highlight the projects and potential of waste heat recovery and thermal storage.  NYSERDA’s programs supporting these areas are encouraging the exploration and expansion of these important energy components.  You’ll hear about individual building projects, campus systems and even utility thermal energy network applications.

Global Perspectives on Geothermal Drilling

This program highlights some of the differences in geothermal drilling practices around the world.  You’ll hear from drillers in the Nordics, UK, Australia & France, and you might be surprised what you hear.  NY-GEO recognizes there are some specific differences in other countries in terms of standards, regulations, equipment and even drilling supplies – so not suggesting these practices are better and should be broadly adopted in our market. But it is good to know there’s other methods practiced successfully elsewhere. Maybe it will give you an idea worth implementing!
