John Joshi

John Joshi is Director of Financial Solutions at NYSERDA. He is a member of the NREL SAPC Working Group to develop the standards for solar securitization and capital market solutions. He works with industry stakeholders to develop standards for solar securitization, risk analysis, best practices for performance reporting and analysis, and formed crucial relationships with the broader finance and investor community.

Mr. Joshi has advised the DOE Office of the Secretary, Under Secretary and the Senate staff on solar finance and securitization. His previous experience at Plant - Smart Energy Solutions, The Clinton Group, Countrywide Alternative Investments, Capital Fusion Partners, Salomon Brothers makes John an expert in all facets of finance, investments, structured finance, strategy, business development, financial strategy and capital markets solutions.

Ted Kantrowitz

Ted Kantrowitz is President and CEO of the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC), Canada’s association for ground-source heat pump technology. Working with a partner in 2005, he helped grow the association from five to over 300 member firms, revising standards and building the world’s most comprehensive quality program for the technology.

Ted has served on various initiatives nationally and internationally related to renewable heat technology and market development, to human resources, and to energy policy. He has also been involved in Canadian Standards Association heat pump-related committees in the past, as well as supporting Korean, Israeli, Indian and Australian industry efforts.

Ted holds a BA from Rutgers University, an MBA from McGill University, and a LEED AP designation.

Andra Leimanis

Andra Leimanis is the Communications and Outreach Coordinator, Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE).

AGREE works to promote the transition to a carbon-free and nuclear-free energy future and educates the public about alternatives that can revitalize the economy and safeguard human health and the environment.

Andra has a background in ecology and botany research; education; public relations; and social media communications. Her environmental advocacy and organizing skills developed during the grassroots movement opposing hydrofracking in New York State, and she contributed advocacy, communications, and photography skills to Solarize initiatives.

Andra received a BA in Economics from SUNY Stony Brook and an MS in Forest Resource Management with an emphasis in Plant Ecology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Chong (John) Lin

Chong (John) Lin

Chong (John) Lin is a Program Manager with National Grid in the New Energy Solutions division. In this role, he manages two innovative projects supporting New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative: a micro-combined heat and power (mCHP) project and a geothermal project.

Drawing on several years' experience in energy efficiency, community outreach, and energy consulting, John is mainly focused on renewable heating and cooling technologies and distributed energy resources.

Before rejoining National Grid this year, John worked for three years for a diverse range of organizations, including ICF International where he worked as an account manager helping buildings in New York City to develop strategic roadmaps to increase energy efficiency and resiliency. John started his professional career with National Grid working on the smart grid project in Worcester, Massachusetts.

John holds a MSc in Environmental Science and Policy from Clark University.

Paul Lundberg

Paul Lundberg is the Assistant Director of Construction Services at Skidmore College. He also has been involved with all of Skidmore’s Energy Conservation Measures; Geothermal development; and Renewable Energy Initiatives within the past 15 years. His influence in developing the Geothermal District approach for Skidmore assisted in the team being designated by AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) with a national award for innovation in 2012.

He is also involved with the recent developments for renewable energy at Skidmore; its 2MW solar array and a hydroelectric facility; 40% of the campus is currently utilizing geothermal technologies and the college is positioned for some of the most exciting sustainability leadership among its peer institutions.

Paul holds degrees in Natural Resources Conservation; Biological Science and certifications in Environmental Management. He received an MS in Energy Management from NYIT. Additionally he has designations as an AEE-C.E.M. and a CGD via IGSHPA.

John Manning, P.E.

John Manning, P.E., supports hundreds of geothermal contractors through Phoenix Energy Supply and Earth Sensitive Solutions. Since obtaining a Research Grant from the National Science Foundation in 1975 John has engaged in every aspect of heat pump design, marketing, application and system design.

As founder of Earth Sensitive Solutions, LLC he has contributed to the successful application of geothermal heat pump technology from Port Augusta, Australia to Auburn, NY. Mr. Manning is also a trained presenter and supporter of The Climate Project.

John is a founding member and Interim Treasurer of NY-GEO.

Kevin Moravec

Kevin Moravec

Kevin Moravec is a Partner with Barney Moravec Inc. (BMI), a fourth-generation drilling company founding in 1934, focused on providing drilling solutions in the water well, geothermal and pump system fields.

BMI entered the geothermal drilling field in 2004. Since then, Kevin has become the owner of VanHee Mechanical, which provides the indoor HVAC portion of the geothermal system. Since focusing on geothermal in 2011, BMI has completed over 200 closed loop projects ranging from single home families to 250,000 SF facilities. His Hunt Country Winery project won Top Job at the inaugural NY-GEO Conference in 2015.

BMI is IGSHPA and CVCLD accredited.

Kevin earned a BS in Business Marketing/Management from St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

Thomas Newbold, P.E.

Thomas E. Newbold, P.E., is president of Landmark Facilities Group, Inc., an engineering firm specializing in the design of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for architecturally significant cultural, commercial, and educational applications.

Tom has a special expertise in the design of geo-exchange systems for unique applications. His clients include Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral, The Woolworth Building, The Cloisters at the Metropolitan Museum, The Frick Collection, The Pierpont Morgan Library, Na-tional Trust for Historic Preservation, and the National Park Service.

He is an AEE Certified Geo-exchange System Designer, a LEED Accredited Professional, a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and a certified Green Building Engineer (GBE).

He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA.

Fred Newell

Fred Newell

Fred Newell is the East Region Manager for WaterFurnace International. WaterFurnace is a manufacturer of geothermal equipment headquartered in Fort Wayne, IN.

In his role as Region Manager, Fred works with Territory Managers, Electric Utilities and Dealers from Missouri across the Midwest and into the East Coast as far as Portland, Maine. He and WaterFurnace focus mainly on the residential Geo business. He has been in the HVAC industry since 2001, working primarily with Dealers and Manufacturers. He began his career with the Quincy, Illinois based HVAC wholesale company, T. F. Ehrhart.

Fred is on the HVAC Advisory Council at Linn State College in Linn, MO and is currently a Board Member for the Geothermal Alliance of Illinois. He has been with WaterFurnace since 2009.

His education is from Missouri State University and he currently lives in Lake Ozark, Missouri.

Bill Nowak

Bill Nowak is a founding member and currently Executive Director of NY-GEO. He is both an environmental advocate and renewable energy promoter. His effectiveness as Director of Policy Research on the NY State Senate Environmental Conservation Committee while working for Senator Antoine M. Thompson contributed to the Senator being named 2010 Legislator of the Year by Environmental Advocates of NY and 2010 Solar Legislative Champion by the NY Solar Energy Industries Association.

In 2011 Bill obtained his IGSHPA Accredited Installer Certification. This added to the many other certifications and education credentials Bill has obtained since obtaining his BA degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He has written articles on renewable energy and geothermal heat pump technology for various publications.

Jens Ponikau

Jens Ponikau is the co-owner of Buffalo Geothermal Heating, a geothermal design and installation firm that installs between 90-100 systems per year in Western NY. He is an International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) accredited geothermal installer and geoexchange designer.

He has a doctoral degree from the University of Hamburg, Germany. Before moving to Western NY and helping to found Buffalo Geothermal in 2008, he had installed 120 geosystems in Germany - his native land. Jens regularly gives seminars and public presentations on geothermal technology and has made public appearances on the radio, in schools, and at home shows to share his knowledge on geothermal heat pimp technology.

Jens is a founding member and Interim Vice President of NY-GEO.

Stan Reitsma

Stan Reitsma, P.E.

Stanley Reitsma, P.E., is the founder and CEO of Geosource Energy Inc., a commercial geothermal heat exchanger contracting company operating in Ontario since 2004. He is also the VP of the Ontario Geothermal Association.

His business focuses on the commercial sector: multi-family condominiums, apartments, and senior citizen facilities with some hospital and other building types. Most of his loop systems are deep vertical systems often installed under buildings prior to other construction.

From 1998-2004 Stan was a tenured assistant professor at the University of Windsor in Civil Engineering.

Stan holds a BS in Geological Engineering, University of Waterloo, an MS in Earth Science, University of Waterloo and a PhD in Civil Engineering, Queen’s University.

John B. Rhodes

John B. Rhodes has been the president and CEO of NYSERDA since 2013. NYSERDA is a public benefit corporation that advances innovative energy solutions to improve New York State’s economy and environment.

He has also served as the director for the Center for Market Innovation at the NRDC, an international environmental advocacy organization. He spent three years as acting chief operating officer at Good Energies, a leading investment firm focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

He is on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Alliance to Save Energy, Urban Green Council, New York Institute for Special Education, American Federation for Aging Research and Cornerstone Literacy.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University and a Master’s degree in management from the Yale School of Management.

John Rhyner is a licensed Professional Geologist and Vice President of Geothermal Services at P.W. Grosser Consulting, Inc.

John is a seasoned environmental consultant, hydrogeologist, client/project manager and accomplished seller-doer within the environmental, geothermal and general site development market sectors. He possesses a unique range of expertise with strong communication and advocacy skills, serving clients throughout the NYC metropolitan area and eastern U.S. John is presently specializing in development of ground-source heat pump systems as an alternative to fossil fuels and conventional HVAC systems for heating and cooling of commercial and high-end residential facilities.

John has a BA in Geology from Dartmouth College. He is also a founding member of NY-GEO and as a founding member of LI-GEO he chaired the Standards and Codes Committee.

Dave Rosick

Dave Rosick

David Rosick is a partner, with his brother Joseph, of Rosick Well Drilling, LLC in Hudson Falls, NY.

He has been involved with the drilling industry for over 40 years, which started with his father, Michael Rosick, the founder of the company. As Rosick Well Drilling grew, the company branched out into well pumps (residential and commercial), water treatment, some monitoring wells and then into geothermal.

Dave is certified through IGSHPA for Geothermal Heat Pump Installation, Fusion and Refrigeration.

Erich Scherer

Erich Scherer

Erich Scherer works as a Senior Advisor for Energy and Environmental Analysis at NYSERDA, supporting analysis and policy development across the full range of NYSERDA's clean energy programs. He arrived at NYSERDA in 2015 from the private sector, where he provided financial services across the solar PV, biomass heat and energy efficiency sectors in London and Philadelphia. Prior to that, Erich held a range of positions with the UK Government Department of Energy and Climate Change, where he was one of the authors of the UK renewables policy framework, comprising the Renewables Obligation, Feed-in Tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentive.

At the European Commission in Brussels, he was one of the designers of the 2009 Renewables Directive, which sets mandatory targets driving renewable energy policy efforts across the European Union. Erich started his career as a lawyer, specializing in corporate and finance law.

He holds Masters degrees from the University of Oxford and the Free University of Amsterdam.

Amanda Schneck

Amanda Schneck

For the past six years Amanda Schneck has been the Territory Manager at WaterFurnace International in New York.

She provides WaterFurnace dealers with sales, marketing, and training support. Amanda loves promoting geothermal heat pump technology with WaterFurnace dealers, builders, engineers, architects and homeowners. Prior to WaterFurnace, Amanda worked for the geothermal design build firm Coneco.

In the past eight years she has seen a shift in the marketplace and the role incentives play. Her experience has given her a unique perspective on the industry.

Amanda has a BS in Environmental Science and Mathematics from Susquehanna University and an MS in Environmental Policy, Science, Economics, Law & Policy from Bard College.

Guy Sliker

Guy Sliker is the Director of Energy Service Product Development at the New York Power Authority, the nation's largest state-owned power organization.

Mr. Sliker has been working in the distributed generation and renewable energy fields for 20 years, primarily with public and private electric utility companies. At his current position at the New York Power Authority Mr. Sliker is responsible for the implementation of the company's product development activities related to distributed energy resources.

Mr. Sliker has a BA in Economics and an MS in Mechanical Engineering, both from the University of Massachusetts.

Cary Smith

Cary Smith is President/CEO of Sound Geothermal Corporation, a design/solutions firm with projects in thirty-one states. Cary is a pioneer in development of hybrid GeoExchange systems and community hybrid systems. He has designed over 20 district and multi-building GX systems.

He is a member of the IGSHPA BOD, Past-Chair ASHRAE TC 6.8 "Geothermal Utilization/Applied Heat Recovery", Chair ASHRAE MTG “Avoided Source Energy Consumption”, Chair NGWA Government Affairs Energy/GSHP sub-committee, founding member of Utah AEE, member of the CGD Certification Board, Board representative to the IGSHPA Standards Committee, and Member of IAPMO USEHC Code Technical Committee.

Cary is an IGSHPA Certified Trainer and co-authored, the IGSHPA CGI course.

Hal Smith is the co-owner with his wife Tammy Smith of Halco. Started in 1984 as a plumbing and heating installation and service business, Halco has evolved into a business providing full energy solutions for residential and commercial clients with an emphasis on quality, service, and sustainability.

In the over the 32 years that Halco has existed, Hal has proven to be an innovator and visionary. He has been a constant and primary force in Halco's development into a leading company that offers high-efficiency heating and cooling systems; home energy audits; and envelope improvements including insulation, air-sealing, and clean renewable energy systems.

His licenses, certifications and affiliations include NATE (North American Technician Excellence, Inc.), ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America), BPI (Building Performance Institute), Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® and DBIA (Design Build Institute of America).

Kyle Thomas, P.E., LEED APBD+C, is the Principal of Natural Systems Engineering, PLLC, a consulting environmental engineering firm located in Syracuse, New York.

Kyle has expertise in watershed and hydrologic modeling, design of green stormwater infrastructure systems, contaminated site remediation and design of renewable energy systems including geothermal and photovoltaic systems.

He is a licensed professional engineer in New York State, a LEED-accredited building professional and is an AEE Certified GeoExchange Designer (IGSHPA CGD Plus) in Training.

Kyle earned a BS and an MPS in Environmental and Resource Engineering at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

David Tine

David Tine is the Business and New Product Development Manager for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company’s (HSB) Energy New Products Group. He is responsible for the development of risk transfer products and services that focus on operational performance for energy efficiency, distributed generation, resiliency, and emerging energy technologies. He has over 15 years of experience in energy efficiency, HVAC, building controls, and sustainability.

Prior to HSB, David worked for Trane and an energy efficiency consulting firm focusing on ESPC, PACE, distributed generation, and new technologies.

David is also a LEED-AP with a specialty in Building Design + Construction and is currently pursuing his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.

David received both his BS and MBA from the University of Connecticut’s School of Business.

Paul Tonko

Paul Tonko, Congressman

Paul Tonko is a 4th-term member of the US House of Representatives serving New York’s 20th Congressional District. He is a proud co-sponsor of H.R.1090, which extends the federal tax credit for geothermal heat pump systems.

Paul is a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, the Science, Space and Technology Committee and the Subcommittee on Research and Technology. He has previously served as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Environment and Economy and on the Natural Resources Committee.

In addition, Paul is a Co-Chair of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), the green voice in Congress. He is also a longtime Honorary Vice-Chair of the Alliance to Save Energy, a bipartisan, non-profit coalition that promotes energy efficiency across all sectors of the global economy. Paul continues to bring clean energy jobs to the Capital Region to ensure it maintains its status as one of the fastest-growing clean technology hubs in the country.

Prior to serving in Congress, Paul was the President and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). He graduated from Clarkson University with a degree in mechanical and industrial engineering and is a former engineer for the New York State Public Service Commission.

Sandler Training has worked with thousands of successful businesses over the years, helping them to develop high performance behaviors, winning attitudes, and superior techniques which ultimately increase market shares, shorten the sales cycle, and protect against being commoditized.

She joined Sandler Training after working in the health care and technology industries. While working in the technology industry she was introduced to the Sandler Sales Mastery program, and found that it had a profound impact on her professionally & personally motivating her to join the company.

Lauren has a BA from SUNY Albany and has won several awards including the Sandler Platinum Award in July 2016.

Tim Weber is a partner and co-founder of Diverso Energy. He works closely with developers of multi-family and commercial office buildings, bringing an opportunity to achieve sustainability and energy reduction targets without the capital cost.

Established in 2015, Diverso Energy offers a unique geothermal financial model for developers of commercial buildings to convert upfront costs into long term operational costs. This allows their clients to leverage the benefits of geothermal without the financial or operating risks associated with the technology.

Tim has been in the geothermal industry since 2004. During this time he has been engaged in technical and business development roles to help grow the residential and commercial geothermal market in Canada and the US. He is always looking for unique financial opportunities remove barriers and allow market penetration.

Bob Wyman

Bob Wyman is a GHP advocate and a renewable energy consultant. He is currently engaged with a number of clients who seek to dramatically increase the adoption of GHP in the US and elsewhere. He also advocates for clean energy solutions in New York City such the elimination of No 6 and No 4 heating oil and the recently passed requirement that GHPs be considered for all new and retrofitted municipal buildings.

Prior to engaging full time with the GHP industry, Bob spent 40+ years in the software industry making significant contributions in the areas of electronic mail, office automation, hypertext, digital rights management, multimedia publishing, and both retrospective and prospective search technologies.
