Once completed, 1 Java in Greenpoint Brooklyn, which is an all-electric residential property, will be the largest residential project in New York State to use a geothermal heat exchange.  the geothermal system at 1 Java Street will reduce annual carbon emissions from heating and cooling by 53% compared with typical residential systems.

This project has received $4M under NYSERDA PON 4614 and $4.6M in a Con Edison Clean Heat Incentive.

25 Stewart - Bushwick

Set to become New York City’s first geothermal powered hotel. The 96,000-square-foot, eight-story hotel will include  160 rooms, a rooftop pool, a restaurant and a health and wellness facility.

Heating, cooling and hot water will be supplied by a geothermal. The site includes 60 boreholes between 300-500'

The first high-rise project in NYC to install a geothermal system.  This project is complete and participants in the tour will be able to see an operating geothermal system including advance controls, vertical stack heat pumps in apartments, and a R744 (C02) domestic hot water system.   This project was supported by a $1.6M award under NYSERDA PON 4614 and $2.9M in a Con Edison Clean Heat Incentive.

Eastchester Building 3
Eastchester Garden and Jackson Houses Geothermal Pilot Projects for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

The goal was to decouple the Domestic Hot Water (DHW) from the central steam system, electrifying portions of the thermal load, and reduce the site emissions of fossil fuel usage by 40% by 2030 (as required by local law 97), all with minimal disturbance to the tenants.

That goal was achieved by installing a geothermal system to decouple and electrify 35% of the thermal load, and 5% more efficient and smaller boilers, due to the avoided DHW load. That way the steam boilers would not have to be operated during the summer heating shutdown.

The design team opted to use a distributed design, with an individual system serving each building, avoiding the higher costs of a district approach.

Two 30-ton Waterfurnace high-temperature heat pumps, able to provide 140F degree water, for 60-ton DHW hot water capacity in each building, providing a standardized and reproducible design approach. A novel design and control approach provides 140F DHW temperature all year long, together with a higher efficiency DHW, including high peak coverage.

The geothermal system is expandable at a later time in order to provide 100% space heating and cooling in order to comply with stricter future emission requirements.

555 Greenwich Street
The state-of-the-art system delivers 100% of the heating and cooling requirements to the 270,000-square-foot, 16-story structure by combining geothermal loops in 63 foundation piles with rooftop-sited modular air and ground sourced heat pumps. The hybrid system includes an active controls system that analyzes real-time ground and air temperature data to responsively provide maximum energy efficiency at minimal operating cost which enables the system to be optimized as building use and climate changes over the years. The system is currently operational, and 555 Greenwich is expected to receive LEED platinum certification—joining only 10 projects awarded that status in New York State.  Read full press release HERE

St. Patricks Cathederal

The renovation of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of New York’s most visited destinations, required strategic planning and phased construction across a campus spanning an entire city block.

Campus infrastructure was upgraded with a seamless insertion of sustainable systems, including a state-of-the-art geothermal heating and cooling system.

The entire project was conducted while the Cathedral remained open for daily masses, welcoming the five million visitors who pass through its doors annually.
